Tissue Alert: There are many words of tears and sadness below. Yet through them all are also moments of the special companionship only a very dearly beloved pet can provide. We are so blessed to have found wonderful owners like Judy and James for every puppy we bred, and especially for Thera.
Thera provided hospice care and support to James Macdonald and Judy Gulliver of Algonac, MI since May of 2003.
On Friday, August 5, 2016, Judy wrote, "Today was a sad day. I took Thera to the vet this morning to put her to sleep. The vet was great, it was a very peaceful ending for her. I was with her and held her until the very end. She has not been feeling well and her kidney failure and anemia was just too much for her body to fight. She is now resting in a better place. Thank you for allowing me to have her these past 13 1/2 years. She has been such a good girl and a sweet dog I will miss her terribly."
In March of 2011, Thera was diagnosed with a malignant nerve sheath tumor. The tumor was removed and Thera underwent 19 radiation treatments over 4 weeks. On April 19, 2011, Judy wrote, "Thera is on her second week of radiation treatment. She is doing well. She's being pampered and loved by all. I've attached a couple of pictures showing where she hangs out with the lab techs."
Judy sent this update on July 8, 2011: "Thera came through her treatment like a champ. It appears the treatment worked well. She's back to her old self...minus the hair on her leg; however, it's starting to grow back on the inside part of the leg... Thank you and everyone that had Thera and us in their prayers."
Judy's January 31, 2016 update brought new health concerns: "She's doing pretty well considering she's having kidney issues. I have her on two human medicines and a special diet. She's eating and drinking and doing her business without any issues. She even plays a little. She still has a short attention span that she's had her whole entire life. But she is the sweetest loving dog you could ever ask for.
I live in senior housing now. And the residents really enjoy her and think she is such a good dog. And ask doesn't she ever bark? Lol on occasion she gives her joyful yodel.... We are looking forward to spring when we can walk around our 6 acres that we live on.
I can hardly believe she will be 13 in March. She has been a blessing. Thank you so much for letting Thera into our lives."
On June 25, 2016, Judy wrote: "Thera is hanging in there. I'll take her back to the vet in July and see what he has to say.
She's holding her own. The medicine and special diet seem to be working for her. She eats drinks and does her business. And plays fetch for me in the house. She doesn't like to go on long walks anymore. But I guess when you're as old as she is that's not your favorite pasttime anymore.
She has been such a joy. When her time finally does come I hope she just curls up in her bed and goes to sleep."
